Healthy Living Tips: Magnesium

Healthy Living Tip of the Day: The Many Benefits of Magnesium

Did you know that magnesium is involved in over 300 chemical reactions in the body?

According to the US Department of agriculture, one of the most common nutritional deficiencies in America is magnesium deficiency.  The farms that grow most of our food in the USA are very good about fertilizing the soil, but they never use magnesium in soil replenishment.  Therefore everything that is grown in magnesium deficient soil is also deficient in magnesium.

So how can you catch up and restore a magnesium deficiency?

The Recommended Daily Allowance of magnesium is 400mg a day, but additional supplementation may be required to overcome deficiency.  Magnesium comes in many different forms, chelated, citrate, gylcinate, lactate, etc…

A few of the effects and functions of Magnesium in the Body:

Required for metabolism of carbohydrates and protein and fats.
Required for production of ATP, the body’s energy source.
Adequate levels reduce risk of cardiovascular disease, relaxes blood vessels,  thins blood resulting in a lower blood pressure.
Involved in calcium metabolism, Vitamin D synthesis, and bone formation.
Helps calcium bind to tooth enamel.

Some common uses for Magnesium in medical treatments:

Migraine Headache:
600mg a day of magnesium citrate has been show to benefit patients that suffer from migraines.

Ringing of the ear:
Daily use of magnesium 400mg showed improvements in Tinnitus.

Leg Cramps in Pregnancy:
Use of Magnesium lactate or Magnesium Citrate chewable tablets used daily.

You need to remember that not all conditions require a prescription medication to be solved.  Many maladies that people suffer on a daily basis can be improved by proper nutrition and diet.

If you have questions about magnesium ask your friendly pharmacist at the Medicine Shoppe or Medicine Center Pharmacies.
